Instrument transformers are functionally used for measuring current ( CT) and voltage ( VT ) in electrical power systems as well as for protection and control of power system, where and when a current or voltage is too large to be conveniently and safely used by an instrument. There are basically two types of Instrument transformers: current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs). The latter are sometimes and also referred to as potential transformers (PTs) simply because they are designed for monitoring single-phase and three-phase power line voltages in power metering applications.
